Do Everything In Your Power To Stop No Deal, TUC Boss Tells MPs

Unionsafety has made it clear even before the EU Referendum took place, that if the UK were to leave the EU; this would be the greatest threat to workplace health and safety, the environment and food safety.

With the threat of an exit from the EU without any deal with Europe making the future catastrophic for this country, TUC General Secretary Frances O’Grady has today (Tuesday 3rd September) written to MPs, calling on them to do everything in their power to stop a disastrous no-deal Brexit:

“A no-deal Brexit would be a disaster for working families.

Jobs would be lost, our rights at work would be undermined, wages would fall and prices would rise. We would face shortages of food and medicine, chaos at our ports, and a hard border in Northern Ireland. There would be a serious risk of civil unrest.

The impact on our economy, workplaces and public services would be felt for generations. This prime minister has no mandate to force a catastrophic no-deal Brexit on the country.”

Indeed, the pound has slumped against the US Dollar today upon the continued political in-fighting and Johnson's anti-democratic stance in wanting to silence any form of political opposition to his plans to leave the EU without a deal and turn this country into 'little America' complete with tax haven status.

Commenting on the government’s tactics and parliamentary efforts to stop no deal, Frances wrote:

“The government’s decision to prorogue parliament and shut down debate on the most important issue facing the country is reckless and divisive. No responsible government would even contemplate no deal. Using tactics like these to force it through should be unthinkable.

For working people, this isn’t a game. Jobs, rights, and livelihoods are on the line.

Denying parliament a say isn't clever – it's cowardly.

The TUC supports all democratic efforts to stop a disastrous no-deal Brexit.

This week you have the chance to stand up for your constituents and ensure that the voice of working people is heard. The stakes couldn’t be higher.”
